Medication-Assisted Weight Loss

weight loss pills

DietMD® is tailored to your specific weight loss needs, which sometimes require the use of medications to reach your weight loss goals and improve blood sugar control.

When you and our DietMD® physician agree that assistance is needed for successful weight loss and management of your blood sugar, the physician can prescribe appropriate FDA-approved medications. Commonly prescribed medications that aid in weight loss include:

Adipex-P (phentermine) – Phentermine is used to suppress your appetite, which can help you to lose weight. This weight loss medication can help weight loss by decreasing your hunger or making you feel fuller for longer. Phentermine is also available in combination with topiramate for weight loss (Qsymia), to both suppress your appetite and reduce food cravings.

Contrave (Naltrexone) – Contrave combines naltrexone, used for substance abuse, with bupropion, an antidepressant. This prescription-only, FDA-approved weight-loss medication works on the brain to reduce cravings and regulate your appetite. It can help obese adults, or overweight adults with weight-related health issues, lose weight and keep it off.

Saxenda (liraglutide) – Saxenda is an injectable prescription medicine used for adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or those with excess weight (BMI ≥27) and a weight-related medical problem. Saxenda is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist medication used to treat Type 2 diabetes and maintain blood sugar control.

Your body naturally makes the GLP-1 hormone in response to eating food and helps to regulate your appetite. Saxenda mimics GLP-1 in your body to help suppress hunger and slow the rate of food emptying from your stomach. Saxenda is administered daily. It can help you consume less food and lose more weight.

Wegovy (semaglutide) – Wegovy is an injectable prescription medicine used for adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or those who are overweight (BMI ≥27) and have weight-related medical problems. Wegovy is injected weekly and, as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, it works to mimic the natural GLP-1 hormone our bodies naturally produce. It is used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to help you lose weight and keep it off.
